Wednesday belongs to the amphitheater
The 2026 Sounds Exciting! Summer Concert Series takes place at the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Amphitheater inside Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park, 801 S. Yarrow St.
Gates open at 5 p.m., the opening act begins at 6:15 p.m., and the headliner starts at 7:15 p.m. That schedule gives the evening a clear shape. Arrive early enough to settle onto the hillside, eat before the music begins, and avoid turning a relaxed concert into a last-minute scramble.
The remaining lineup after July 15 is:

- July 29: Paul McDonald & The Mourning Doves, with The Threadbarons opening
Adult tickets cost $13 in advance and $18 on the day of the concert. Buying ahead saves $5 per adult. Children ages 1 through 12 are $10, and infants under 1 are admitted free.
The picnic policy is one of the biggest differences between this series and the Plaza concerts. You may bring food and an empty refillable water bottle. Food trucks and soft drinks are also available, along with a beer garden. Outside alcohol is not allowed.
Bring a blanket or low-profile lawn chair. The concerts are held rain or shine, so checking the forecast should determine what goes into the bag, not whether the event is assumed to be canceled.
Free event parking is available at the Lakewood Cultural Center and Lakewood Police Department. Heritage Lakewood has accessible parking, and accommodation requests should be made at least 48 hours before the event.

Admission is free, although RSVPs are encouraged. Lawn chairs are welcome, and each concert is weather permitting.

The closing night adds a second event. Montage performs from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by a silent disco hosted by Alameda Connects from 8:30 to 10 p.m.
Unlike Sounds Exciting!, Street Fest does not allow outside food or beverages. That rule points the evening toward Belmar’s restaurants and outdoor bars rather than a packed picnic.
Belmar’s current dining directory includes Great Divide Brewing Company & Roadhouse, Lady Nomada, Little India Restaurant & Bar, Mason’s Dumplings, Mono GoGo Korean Fried Chicken, Pho Saigon Basil, Tstreet Roadhouse, and Wasabi Sushi Bar. The French Press and the Belmar location of Bad Ass Coffee offer earlier-day options. Bad Ass Coffee opened in Belmar in early 2026 at 7250 W. Alaska Drive, Suite 200.
Specific concert-night offers can change, so choose a restaurant based on its current menu and hours rather than assuming every Belmar business has a Street Fest special.
The practical Thursday plan
Street Fest works best when the meal and music are treated as one outing. Choose a Belmar restaurant, allow enough time to eat, then bring a lawn chair to the Plaza before the 6 p.m. performance.
If you would rather snack during the show, use the Plaza’s participating food and drink options. Do not arrive with a cooler or outside meal. The free admission does not mean the venue follows the amphitheater’s picnic policy.
This is also the more weather-dependent concert choice. Sounds Exciting! is held rain or shine, while the Plaza concerts are weather permitting. Check the event page before leaving if the forecast is unsettled.
August 1 gives Heritage Lakewood its own spotlight
The concert calendar is only part of the story at Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park. The site celebrates its 50th birthday on Saturday, August 1, from 4 to 8 p.m.
The free anniversary event includes an exhibition opening, access to historic buildings, live music, hayrides, cider pressing, demonstrations, a scavenger hunt, and food trucks. Blacksmithing and calligraphy classes are available for a fee.
The celebration also opens the new 50 Years of Heritage in Lakewood exhibition, which remains on view through November 28, 2026. Heritage Lakewood’s exhibits are free during regular gallery hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
For a daytime outing before the end of July, Summer Storytime with Belmar Library continues at the outdoor amphitheater on Thursdays at 10:15 a.m. through July 30.
A small but useful site update also affects regular visitors. Stormwater work associated with the private development at 777 S. Yarrow St. is complete, and the new concrete at the Belmar Park trail crossing is open to pedestrians and bicycles. Restoration fencing remains while the area is reseeded.
Big Soda Lake requires a current-conditions plan
Big Soda Lake sits inside Bear Creek Lake Park at 15600 W. Morrison Road. From May through September, the park is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The swim beach is scheduled to operate daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
There are no lifeguards on duty.
The beach area includes picnic sites, a concession stand, a playground, and two sand volleyball courts. Swimming is allowed only within the designated area. Beach picnic shelters are first come, first served, and groups of 25 or more need a park-use permit.
Vehicle admission is $10 on regular days. Peak admission is $15 on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. A general annual pass costs $80. For residents comparing repeat visits, the annual pass costs less than six $15 peak-day entries.
What is open, and what needs another check
Lakewood is under Drought Stage 1. The city expects Big Soda Lake to lose 200 acre-feet of water and says the swim beach has been altered because of low water levels. Swimming and paddle sports remain available as water levels permit, but conditions may change later in the season.
The city’s most specific current activity listing says the general swim beach is open while the lap-swimming lane is closed due to low water. City page language has not been fully consistent on the lap lane, so do not plan a lap-swimming workout without checking the live park listing first.
Access also changed in July. As of July 10, the city closed the unsanctioned south-side access to Big Soda Lake. Illegal parking there had blocked emergency access, damaged habitat, and created hazardous conditions. Use the official Bear Creek Lake Park entrance rather than an informal launch area.
Big Soda Lake is limited to nonmotorized boats. Paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, and pedal boats are typically available to rent during summer. Every person on a boat needs a personal flotation device, including anyone using a paddleboard.
Pack for the actual beach rules
Before loading the car, account for these restrictions:
- No glass bottles
- No smoking or vaping
- No personal charcoal grills
- No grills placed directly on the sand
- Dogs must remain leashed and cannot enter the beach’s sand area
- Pool toys must stay within wading distance of shore
- Floats larger than six feet in diameter are prohibited in the swimming area
Lakewood had also declared a fire ban for city parks and open spaces at the time of this July update. Check current restrictions before bringing cooking equipment. Bear Creek Lake Park lists Saturday summer campfire programs through July 26, but the active fire ban means the format or availability should be confirmed directly with the park.
